Traveldiary Edinburgh – Ein Wochenende in Schottland

{:de}Ich hab es getan. Nach neun langen Jahren war ich endlich wieder in Schottland. Und es fühlte sich ein bisschen wie nach Hause kommen an. Ich liebe alles an diesem Land. Das Wetter, die Leute, den Dialekt und die Tatsache, dass die Leute hier tatsächlich Marsriegel fritieren. Und auch meine Schwester, die in Newcastle geboren wurde, konnte es kaum erwarten endlich aus dem Flugzeug zu steigen. Da waren wir nun also, pünktlich zu Valentinas 20. Geburtstag landeten wir am Edinburgh Airport, flitzen zum Airport Shuttle Richtung Stadt und standen ganz schnell vor dem Motel One. Dem falschen, wie sich herausstellte, aber das war gar nicht schlimm, denn wir mussten nur wenige Minuten zu Fuss gehen um dann vor dem schönen Motel One Princes Street zu stehen. Einmal eingecheckt und kurz frischgemacht konnte die Entdeckungstour auch schon losgehen.

Wenn es um die Wahl des perfekten Stadthotels geht, spielt für mich eines eine ganz wichtige Rolle: die Lage. Und mit dem Motel One in der Princes Street hätten wir es nicht besser treffen können. Der Bahnhof Waverly Station ist fast vor der Haustür, mit der Princes Street hat man unzählige Einkaufsmöglichkeiten und der Busbahnhof für Tagesauflüge in die Highlands oder aber auch nach Scourie, Newcastle oder St. Andrews ist gleich ums Eck. Für den ersten Tag ging es erstmal los um mir einen Pullover zu besorgen und Valentina eine Regenjacke. Wir waren beim Packen wohl etwas naiv, denn Edinburgh hieß uns mit jeder Menge Wind und Regen willkommen. Wie hätte es anders sein sollen.

In unseren Tagen in Edinburgh entdeckten wir jede Menge süße Lokale, ich hab hier einen eigenen Foodguide für euch geschrieben ich hab hier einen eigenen Foodguide für euch geschrieben, in dem ihr bestimmt fündig werdet. Mein absoluter Favorit war übrigens das Outsider!

Edinburgh ist die perfekte Stadt für einen Wochenendtrip, weil die Stadt nicht zu groß ist und man trotzdem jede Menge unternehmen kann. Hier also meine To-Do-Liste für die Hauptstadt von Whiskey und Dudelsäcke:

Arthur`s Seat

Als Berg kann man den Arthur’s Seat nicht bezeichnen, aber man hat eine tolle Aussicht auf Edinburgh und das Meer von dort oben. Zieht euch was warmes an, dort oben ist es durch den Wind ganz schön frisch!

National Monument of Scotland

Wem der Arthur’s Seat zu hoch ist, kann auch zum National Monument of Scotland raufspazieren. Weniger hoch, aber trotzdem mit toller Aussicht auf die Stadt, vor allem bei Sonnenuntergang!

Edinburgh Castle

Im Sommer könnt ihr hier das Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sehen, ein Militärkonzert mit jede Menge Dudelsackspieler. Schottischer geht’s kaum oder? Aber auch sonst stehen während des gesamten restlichen Jahres Dudelsackspieler in voller Montur rund um die Burg und die Royal Mile und geben kleine Konzerte.

Royal Mile

Die Royal Mile ist auch eine Einkaufsstraße, allerdings reihen sich hier ein Souvenirshop nach dem anderen. Sehr touristisch, aber dennoch auf jeden Fall sehenswert. Von hier aus seid ihr auch schnell beim Outsider und auch beim Elephanthouse, dem Lokal in dem J.K. Rowling persönlich Harry Potter geschrieben hat. Ihr könnt euch die Menschenmassen vor dem Lokal bestimmt vorstellen.

Victoria Street

Nur ein paar Minuten von der Royal Mile entfernt ist die Victoria Street. Sie ist nicht nur unglaublich fotogen mit den vielen bunten Fassaden, ihr findet auch richtig süße Geschäfte hier. Von traditionellen Schneidern, über Interiorshops bis zu einem Harry Potter Shop könnt ihr hier Mitbringsel kaufen die nicht 0815 sind.

Natürlich gibt es aber noch viel mehr zu sehen und zu unternehmen, aber alles schafft man dann doch nicht an einem Wochenende. Und dann hätte ich natürlich auch noch ein paar Geheimtipps für euch:

1. Erspart euch den langen Weg über die Royal Mile zur Burg, indem ihr beim Motel One Royal die Treppe raufgeht und dann schon fast bei der Burg seid.
2. Wenn ihr zum Frühstück keine Reservierung macht, dann seid vor 9 Uhr im Lokal um noch einen guten Tisch zu bekommen.
3. Reserviert IMMER für den Afternoon-Tea, da er am Morgen frisch zubereitet wird. Und nehmt euch überhaupt einen Nachmittag für den Afternoon-Tea Zeit.
4. Mit dem Airlink seid ihr wirklich am schnellsten und günstigsten in der Stadt, die Station Waverly Station ist die Endstation und wirklich gut zu erreichen. Die Hin- und Rückfahrt kostet 7,50 Pfund und ihr habt Wlan im Bus.
5. Seid schlauer als ich und packt unbedingt auch ein paar wärmere Sachen ein. Es kann immer und überall zu regnen beginnen. Ich habe auch gleich die Chance genützt um mir Hunterboots zu kaufen, die standen schon ewig auf meiner Liste.

{:}{:en}I did it! After nine long year, I travelled back to Scotland. And it felt a little bit like coming home. I just love this country: the weather, the people, the dialect and the fact, that this people eat deep fried mars bars. So we landed on my sisters 20th birthday, who was born in Newcastle, in Edinburgh and celebrated her birthday in Scotland. After arriving at Edinburgh airport, we took the airport shuttle to the city and really quickly we found ourselfs standing in front of the Motel One. The wrong one, what we realized after a while, but that was no problem, because the right one was just a short walk over the bridge to the Princes Street away. Onced checked in, we started discovering Edinburgh.

When I’m searching for the perfect hotel for a city trip, there is one thing really important: the location. With the Motel One Princes Street, we couldn’t make a better choice. The train station Waverly Station is just in front of the hotel, at Princes Street you can shop till you drop and the bus station for daytrips is just around the corner. Our first stop while exploring the city was the Princes Street, not only because it was in front of our hotel, also because I packed way to less warm clothes and I really forgot how cold Scotland can be. So what to do in Edinburgh on a weekend? Here is my to-do-list for the capital of whiskey and bagpipes:

Arthur`s Seat

Okay, for me it’s really not a mountain, but you have an amazing view over Edinburgh and the sea from above. Take a warm coat with you, its really windy and cold up there!

National Monument of Scotland

If the Arthur’s Seat is too high for you, you could take a walk to the National Monument of Scotland. It doesn’t take that long to get up there and you have also an amazing view, especially while sunset.

Edinburgh Castle

In summer you can see the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a military concert with bagpipes. Couldn’t get more scottish in my opinion. And around the castle you can find a lot of pipers while the rest of the year.

Royal Mile

The royal mile is  another shoppingstreet, where you can buy lots of souvenirs.  A little touristy, but also worth seeing it. From here you are in a few minuets at the Outsider (my favorite restaurant in Edinburgh) and the Elephanthouse, where J. K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter.

Victoria Street

A short walk away from the Royal Mile is the Victoria Street. So cute with the colorful houses, you can buy souvenirs which are not that common. There are so many charming shops, like traditionell tailors, interior shops and a Harry Potter shop.

You can see a lot in one weekend, but of course there are a lot more things to do in Edinburgh. Oh and of course we found a lot of cute little restaurants and cafés, which I reviewed in my Edinburgh Foodguide. My favorite: the Outsider!

And then I have a few secret tips for you:

1. Save time and skip the Royal Mile to get to the castle and take the staircase next to the Motel One Royal to get up there.
2. If you want to have a delicious breakfast in one of my recommended spots, but don’t have a reservation, be there before 9 a.m to get a table.
3. Always make a reservation for Afternoon-Tea, because in most of the times it gets prepared in the morning for you. And: take time for an afternoon-tea!
4. With the Airlink you are very fast in the city, plus it’s not that expensive. The Waverly Station is the last stop and from here you are really quick in the city center. A round-trip costs 7,50 pound and you have free wifi.
5. Pack some warm clothes, also in summer, because Scotland is always windy and cold and it can start raining every second. I took the chance to finally buy my hunterboots, which I wanted since 5 years.
