Wisst ihr was Italiener wirklich gut können?
1. – Kaffee. Ich brauch nicht mehr zu sagen, oder?
2. – Sie schaffen es im Handumdrehen einen um den Finger zu wickeln.
Und 3. – Sie verstehen wirklich was davon wie man richtig leckeres Eis macht! Und zwar in jeder Sorte die man sich nur vorstellen kann.
Heute möchte ich euch etwas zu Punkt 3 erzählen. Und vielleicht ein bisschen was zu Punkt 2. Erinnert ihr euch an meinen italienischen Freund, Lorenzo, von dem ich in meinen 10 facts about me erzählt habe? Nun ja, er ist ein waschechter Römer und kennt die Stadt in und auswendig. Wer ist also eine bessere Wahl für Insidertipps denn ein Einheimischer? Ich habe ihn vor 6 Jahren während meines Praktikums in der Toskana kennengelernt und sind seitdem immer noch befreundet. Als ich dann aber in Rom war, haben wir es leider nicht geschafft uns zu treffen, aber trotzdem hat er mir bei der Planung immer wieder seine Geheimtipps verraten, unter anderem wo es das beste Eis in Rom gibt! Dazu noch ein bisschen italienischer Charm und man kann ihm nicht mal lange böse sein 😉 In Rom habe ich mich dann einfach allein auf die Suche nach den Gelaterias gemacht, die er mir geraten hat und so das beste Eis in Rom gefunden. Als ich schließlich am Flughafen zurück nach Wien saß und mit einer Freundin telefonierte und ihr vom vielen leckeren Eis erzählte, meinte sie, dass mir in Wien jetzt bestimmt kein Eis mehr schmecken wird, aber ich habe eine gute Nachricht für alle Leute aus Wien und Umgebung: eine der drei vorgestellten Gelaterias gibt es auch in Wien. Aber dazu später mehr. Ich habe jede Gelateria probiert (und noch ein paar mehr, aber das waren wirklich die besten) und ich kann euch einen Tipp geben: Fangt nie, nie, nie mit einer Diät kurz vor Rom an, denn es bringt nichts.
I Caruso
Das i Caruso stand auf Lorenzos Liste ganz oben. In der Nähe von Repubblica etwas versteckt in der Via Collina liegt es eigentlich recht unscheinbar in einer kleinen Seitenstraße und außer mir war nur ein anderes amerikanisches Ehepaar dort. Mit Händen und Füssen versuchten sie zu erklären, dass sie das Eis in einer Tüte wollen, aber trotzdem gerne einen Löffel dazu hätten, was der Eisverkäufer einfach nicht nachvollziehen konnte. Nachdem ich an der Reihe kam ein etwas genervt und gelangweiltes „Pronto“ vom Eisverkäufer und so bemühte ich mich alles richtig auf italienisch auszusprechen. Plötzlich fing er an zu strahlte und plapperte auf Italienisch weiter (ich verstand kein Wort und lächelte und nickte nur) und schlussendlich schenkte er mir noch eine Eiskugel extra dazu. Das Haselnusseis war ein Traum, aber noch viel besser fand ich das Zitroneneis.
Magnum Pleasure Store
Bevor ich überhaupt nach Rom reiste sammelte ich nicht nur von Lorenzo, sondern auch von anderen Freunden Reisetipps für Rom. Und ein Punkt kam von allen Seiten: der Magnum Pleasure Store. Nachdem ich so viel von ihm gehört hatte war ich schon sehr gespannt und gleichzeitig dachte ich mir ich darf nicht zu viel erwarten. Am dritten Tag schafften Julia und ich es zum Store und ich war sofort begeistert und konnte die Begeisterung meiner Freunde sofort verstehen. Auch wenn es kein traditionelles italienisches Eisgeschäft ist, ist es einfach etwas besonderes, denn man kann sein eigenes Magnum Eis kreieren. Für 4 Euro sucht man sich ein Magnum Eis aus (Kakao oder Vanille), lässt es entweder in weißer Schokolade, Milchschokolade oder dunkler Schokolade tauchen und sucht sich dann noch drei Toppings (ich bin mir sicher für einen kleinen Aufpreis darf man sich auch mehr Toppings aussuchen) aus. Ich entschied mich für Himbeere, Haselnüsse und Krokant. Danach kommt noch weiße Schokolade drüber. Ihr könnt euch gar nicht vorstellen wie unglaublich lecker das war! Leider gibt es dort nur wenig Sitzgelegenheiten und so aßen wir unser Eis halb im Sitzen, halb im Gehen und schafften es sogar uns nicht anzukleckern!
La Romana
Auch auf Lorenzos Liste: das la Romana. Das es eine Kette ist wusste ich nicht und umso begeisterter war ich, das eines der Filialen genau im Haus gegenüber von Julia war, bei der ich ja ein paar Tage wohnte. Sie erzählte mir, dass an manchen Tagen die Leute bis hinten auf die Straße anstehen, weil das Eis so gut ist. Obwohl ich genau gegenüber wohnte, schaffte ich es erst an meinem letzten Tag in Rom das Eis selbst zu probieren. Kurz vor Abflug bin ich noch schnell dort hin gegangen und konnte so noch ein letztes Eis genießen. Und jetzt fragt ihr euch bestimmt, was daran so besonders ist, oder? Also: in die Waffel wird flüssige Schokolade gegossen, die Kugeln sind riesig und teilweise sogar vegan und weil ich mich nicht entscheiden konnte welche der unzähligen Sorte ich will, durfte ich sogar vorher löffelweise probieren. Schließlich entschied ich mich für Bacio di Dama und es war fantastisch.
Und jetzt zum schon angesprochenen Wien-Tipp: die Gelateria la Romana gibt es in Wien auch in der Stiftgasse im 7. Bezirk! Ich war erst vor kurzem dort und es ist wirklich genau gleich wie in Rom – gleich gemütlich und natürlich auch wirklich leckeres Eis. Ich finde ja, dass die Gelateria dem Eisgreissler ganz schöne Konkurrenz macht! Vorbeischauen lohnt sich also, vor allem weil hier bei weitem nicht so viele Leute anstehen wie beim Eis Greissler.

Today I want to write about the last part. And maybe a little bit about the second point ;). Do you remember my italian friend, Lorenzo? I wrote about him in my 10 facts about me – blogpost. Well, he is a genuine roman and knows the city inside out. And so he is the best choice for insidertipps from locals. I met him 6 years ago (god, I’m getting old!) while my internship in toscany and we are still friends. Unfortuantely we was not in Rome when I was there this time, but he gave me some great tips while planing the trip. Amongst others where to get the best icecream in Rome. With such great tips and a little italian charm I was not able to be angry at him because he wasn’t in the city. When in Rome I tried all the gelaterias we mentioned and found the best icecream in Rome. When I was waiting at the airport in Rome to fly back to Vienna, I talked with a friend and told her about the amazing icecream. I remember that she told me, that after this days in Rome I will be unsatisfied with the icecream in Vienna. But I have some good news for everyone from Vienna: one of the gelaterias has a store in Vienna too! But later more about that. Oh and a little advise: don’t start a diet before traveling to italy, it’s no use.
I Caruso
The i Caruso was on top of Lorenzo’s list. The gelateria is located near by Republicá in Via Collina, a little side street. Nobody besides an older american couple was in the gelateria. They tried to explain that they want the icecream in a cone but with little plastic spoons. The iceman did not understand and was a little bit annoyed. When it was my turn we only said „Pronto“, a little bit bored and annoyed at the same time. So I attemped my best italian and tried to pronounce everything right. Suddenly we started smiling and chattered in italian. I did not understand a word, but smiled back and in the end he gave me an extra scoop for free. The hazlenut-icecream was delicious, but in my opinion lemon was even better.
Magnum Pleasure Store
Before traveling to Rome I collected tips from Lorenzo, but also from other friends. One thing everybody told me to do was to go to the Magnum Pleasure Store. I was quiet excited because everyone was talking about it and on my 3th day we made it to the store. And my friends were right, it is great! You can create your own Magnum for 4 Euros. You choose between chocolate or vanilla magnum, then they dip it in white chocolate, milk chocolate or dark chocolate and then you choose three toppings (I’m sure for with an upcharge you can choose more then 3). I chose raspberries, hazlenut and brittle. After that they put more white chocolate over the whole thing. You can imagine how delicious that was. Unfortunately they don’t have that much seats, so we had it to-go and luckly made it without soiling.
La Romana
Also on Lorenzo’s list: the La Romana. I did not realize that it’s a chain and was excited that one of the gelaterias was in front of the house of Julia, the friend where I stayed for a few nights. She told me, that on some days the line goes out of the shop on the street, because the icecream is really really good. Although I passed it a few times I made it only then on my last day to try the icecream. Before I left to the airport I took some time to enjoy my last icecream in Rome. And know you want to know what is so special at La Romana, don’t you? First things first: they pour molten chocolate in the cone. The scoops are huge and some of them are vegan and because I could not make a choice, I was allowed to try some flavors first with a spoon. At the end I chose bacio di dama and it was the best choice!
And now the Vienna-tip: the Gelateria La Romana has also a store in Vienna in the Stiftgasse in the 7. district! In two weeks I was there at least three times, because the icecream is exactly like in rome. In my opinion, it’s even better then Eisgreissler, especially because it’s a secret tip and there are not that much people in the line.
