Expecto Patronum – Make your own Harry Potter tour in London

Ihr wisst es wahrscheinlich noch nicht, aber ich liebe Harry Potter. Es ist mehr als das: Ich habe die Bücher so oft gelesen, dass ich nicht mehr mitzählen kann. Bei den Filmen kann ich auswendig mitreden. In dem Umhang, den meine Mama mir für Weihnachten genäht habe, hab ich regelrecht gelebt, ich hab ihn wirklich nie ausgezogen. Sämtliche Essstäbchen bei uns zu Hause wurden zu Zauberstäben umfunktioniert und jahrelang spielten wir mit unserer Nachbarin Anna Zaubertränke und Hexen McDonalds (unsere Kunden flogen mit dem Besen in unser DriveIn). Aber ich hab es immer noch nicht in die Harry Potter Studios geschafft, shame on me! Und auch bei meiner letzten London-Reise nicht, denn auch meine Mitbewohnerin liebt Harry Potter und vor einigen Monaten haben wir beschlossen gemeinsam dorthin zu fahren. Es war also wirklich schwer für mich keine Tour zu buchen und heimlich alleine dorthin zugehen. Schon als Kind besuchten wir Film-Locations von Harry Potter an verschiedenen Orten in England und Schottland und so habe trotz meines Versprechens meine eigene kleine Harry Potter Tour in London gemacht, denn viele Drehorte können ganz einfach in eine normale London Sightseeing Tour eingebaut werden. Ich präsentiere: die etwas andere Harry Potter Tour!

King’s Cross

Der wohl offensichtlichste Ort ist der Bahnhof King’s Cross. Dort gibt es nicht nur einen Harry Potter Fanshop, nein, man kann auch ein Erinnerungsfoto am Gleis 9 3/4 machen lassen. Nun ja nicht wirklich am Bahngleis, sonst müsste man ja ein Zugticket kaufen um durch das Drehkreuz zu kommen. Aber gleich neben den Regionalzügen ist eine kleine Absperrung mit einem Schild „Platform 9 3/4“. In der Schlange standen viele asiatische Touristen, Familien mit Kindern und mir! Da ich alleine unterwegs war, erklärte sich der Fotograf des Fanshops bereit mit meiner Kamera ein Foto zu machen („Looks quit expensive, don’t you worry my dear, we don’t give it to anyone, I take the picture for you. Okay smiiiiile and don’t forget the wand!“) Und das ist das Ergebnis – etwas verschwommen aber #goals!

Millenium Bridge

Erinnert ihr euch an die Szene in „Harry Potter und der Halbblutprinz“, als die Todesser durch London fliegen und alles zerstören was ihnen in den Weg kommt. Unter anderem auch die Millenium Bridge. Die Gegend ist nicht nur wegen der beeindruckenden Brücke einen Besuch wert, in der Nähe befindet sich auch das „The Shard“-Gebäude, von dem man aus einen beeindruckenden Blick über die Stadt hat.

London City Hall

Nicht unweit der Tower Bridge, die sowieso auf jede Sightseeing-Liste in London gehört, ist die London City Hall, die ebenfalls in „Harry Potter und der Halbblutprinz“ vorkommt. Genauer gesagt in der Szene, als die Muggel das eigenartig schnell verändernde Wetter und damit das Ankommen der Todesser sehen.

Leadenhall Market

Während meines Praktikums machte ich nach der Arbeit immer wieder Sightseeingtouren. Eines Tages verirrte ich mich zwischen den Wolkenkratzern im Finanzviertel und landete in einer wunderschönen Halle, die so gar nicht in die Glasfassaden der Hochhäuser passte. Irgendwie erinnerte sie mich an Harry Potter. Einige Jahre später kam ich drauf, dass einige Szenen, genauer gesagt die Szenen der Winkelgasse, genau hier gedreht wurden. Ich suchte die Leadenhall Market wieder und wie aus Zufall fand ich sie auch dieses Mal unerwartet wieder. Statt Flourish and Bloods, Gringotts, Ollivanders und Weasleys Zauberhafte Zauberscherze reiht sich hier ein Pub nach dem anderen. Es gibt aber auch Vinotheken, Delikatessenläden und Blumengeschäfte. Der Eingang zum Tropfenden Kessel in „Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen“ wurde übrigens in 41 Bull’s Head Passage, Leadenhall Market, beziehungsweise 7A Stoney Street gedreht.

Piccadilly Circus

Als Harry, Ron und Hermine in „Harry Potter und die Heiligtümer des Todes Teil 1“ von Fleur und Bills Hochzeit von den Todessern disapparieren müssen, kommen sie am Piccadilly Circus raus, den hier war Hermine früher oft mit ihren Eltern, wenn sie ins Theater gingen. Hier seid ihr nicht unweit von der Regent Street, Chinatown, den vielen Theatern und auch Covent Garden ist zu Fuss nicht weit entfernt.

St. Pancras Rennaissance Hotel

Nur einen Steinwurf vom Kings Cross Bahnhof entfernt ist das St. Pancras Rennaissance Hotel, der Ort, an dem Harry und Ron Mr. Weasleys verzaubertes Auto klauten und über London nach Hogwards flogen. Der zweite Teil ist zwar nicht mein Lieblingsteil, aber dennoch ist das ein Punkt, den man unbedingt gesehen haben muss. Übrigens, hier wurde auch „Wannabe“ von den Spice Girls gedreht!

Claremont Square

Als meine Freundin Mona mir empfahl unbedingt nach Angel zu fahren, wusste ich nicht, dass auch hier Harry Potter gedreht wurde. Genauer gesagt ist das der Grimmauld Platz, wo sich das Elternhaus von Sirius Black und das Hauptquartier des Phönix Ordens befindet.

Neben all diesen Orten gibt es noch viele andere Drehorte von Harry Potter in London, für die ich leider keine Zeit hatte. Ich will sie euch trotzdem nicht vorenthalten. Wenn ihr mehr Zeit wie ich habt, dann schaut unbedingt auch an diesen Orten vorbei:

EN: You maybe don’t know it, but I love Harry Potter. A lot! It’s more then love: I read the books so often, that I stopped counting. I know the film script by heart. I lived in the cape my mum sewed me for christmas, I never took it off. All chinese chopsticks turned into wands and together with my neighbor Anna we played potions and wizard McDonalds (our customers flew with their broomsticks in our drive-in) for years.But after all that I didn’t manage it to book a tour to the Warner Bros „Making of Harry Potter“-tour, shame on me! My roomie loves Harry Potter nearly as much as I do, and so I had to promise her to make this tour together with her. It was hard, but till that day I did not go. But I did one thing: I made my own Harry Potter-tour on my own through London. There are a lot of shooting locations at popular sightseeing-spots, and it’s nearly for free (besides money you have to spend for the public transport and some entries). I present: the other Harry Potter tour trough London!

King’s Cross

I think this is the most obvious stop on this tour: the King’s Cross station. You can shop at the Harry Potter fanshop and make a pictues of a baggage car at platform 9 3/4. (Well, not really at the platform, first: because you would have to buy a train ticket and second: it does not exist really, joke!) Next to the nationals railways is a little barrier with a sign „Platform 9 3/4“. In the queue some asian tourists, families with children and me are waiting for a memory picture at the famous baggage car. I was traveling on my own, but luckily the photgrapher from the fanshop made a picture for me with my camera („Looks quit expensive, don’t you worry my dear, we don’t give it to anyone. I take the picture for you. Okay smiiiiile and don’t forget the wand!“) And that’s the result – a little bit blurred but #goals!

Millenium Bridge

Do you remember the scene in „Harry Potter and the half blood prince“, where the death eaters fly through London and destroy everything that is in their way? They also destroyed the Millenium Bridge. The surrounding is really impressive, also because of „the shard“-building, where you have a great view over London.

London City Hall

Not far away from the tower bridge, which is listed on every sightssing-tour, the London city hall is located, which also appears at „Harry Potter and the half blood prince“. More specifially in that scene, where the muggles watch the strange and fast changing weather and the arrival of the death eaters in London.

Leadenhall Market

While my internship in London I made some sightseiing-tours through the city after work. One day I got lost and found this beautiful market hall inbetween the skyscrapers of the finance district by chance. I remember that I thought about Harry Potter, but I had no idea. After some years I read about it and realized, that it’s the shooting location of the Diagon Alley in the first films. This time I searched for the Leadenhall market and again I found it by chance. Instead of Flourish and Bloods, Gringotts, Ollivanders and Weasleys ‚ Wizards Wheezes, there are a lot of pubs, wine houses and flower shops. The entrance to the leaky cauldron was filmed at 41 Bull’s Head Passage, Leadenhall Market and 7A Stoney Street.

Piccadilly Circus

When Harry, Ron and Hermoine escaped from the death eaters at Bill and Fleurs wedding at „Harry Potter and the deathly hallows“, they disapparate and came out at Piccadilly Circus, because Hermoine reminded this place from some theatre visits with her parents. Plus: here you are at the beginning of Regent’s streets, chinatown and also covent garden is not far away.

St. Pancras Rennaissance Hotel

Only a few steps apart from King’s Cross is the St. Pancras Rennaisance Hotel, the place where Harry and Ron start their adventours journey to Hogwards with Mr. Weasleys magical car. They fly over London till somewhere in Scotland. Although „Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets“ is not my favorite Harry Potter movie, it’s still a place to be. Off-topic: the spice girls shot „Wannabe“ also at this place!

Claremont Square

When my friends Mona recommended me to go to Angel, I had no idea that this is also a shooting location. Here the „Grimmauld place“ is located at Claremont square, where Sirius Black grew up and also the order of the phoenix is located.

Besides of that, there are much more shooting locations from the Harry Potter movies in and around London. I had not enough time to see them all (now), but you maybe have. So here are some more places to see:
